Global Workspace Theory aligns with functionalist intuitions, while Integrated Information Theory has a more complex relationship—it offers computational measures but predicts that purely feedforward systems lack consciousness. In contrast, biological naturalists—including philosophers John Searle, Peter Godfrey-Smith, and Ned Block—argue that consciousness requires the unique causal properties of living matter, evolved homeostatic regulation, or embodiment in biological tissue. Between these extremes, Jonathan Birch's 2025 "Centrist Manifesto" advocates epistemic humility, acknowledging that alien forms of consciousness might emerge in AI systems but our current understanding is "too immature to provide confident answers." Contemporary philosophy of mind recognizes multiple versions of materialism with varying implications for AI consciousness, from computational and functionalist approaches to embodied and enactive perspectives, with many frameworks remaining "surprisingly neutral" about whether machines can be conscious.
